In 2007, Mi Familia Institute was established to help Statesville’s Hispanic community navigate the difficult journey of assimilation by “building family strength through education, promotion of respect, and advocacy for social justice.” Mi Familia has a wide range of programs, ranging from domestic violence prevention to financial planning. It relies heavily on volunteers, and partners with several local agencies to help increase course offerings and community outreach. We are a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. “First build trust,” is our motto, trust then builds a connection that strengthens families, quality of life and self-dependency. Mi Familia services our community with the following programs, classes, training and workshops.

Literacy English Proficiency: ESL classes with a basic curriculum of daily life activities to promote English reading, listening, and speaking. Tutoring for children from kinder to high school. Citizenship Literacy: CIS examination, community leadership, voting and self-advocacy. Financial Literacy: How to open a bank account, budget, goal setting, credit loan and home ownership education/information. Health Care Education: Clinic, health care education and prevention programs to address primary care needs in the community. Vocational Training: Basic skills workshops in carpentry, painting, commercial cleaning, etc. To increase opportunities for permanent jobs.
Familiy Leadership Parenting Classes: In formation and advice on dealing with common pediatric parenting issues and problems, including nutrition, growth, development, potty training, safety, first aid, and common infections. Domestic Violence: Information/ workshops on different forms such as: physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse and other abusive behaviors and its prevention. Teen Mentoring: Programs that empower teens to make responsible decisions and have accountability for their actions by creating positive community attachment and strengthening community involvement with family and other youth.
